Peak Forest Tramway: one of the earliest mineral railways in Britain to link with an inland waterways system and to use iron rails. It opened in 1796, linking the vast quarries at Doveholes with the Bugsworth Canal Basin, 6 miles to the north east - a route engineered by Benjamin Outram, who successfully overcame the challenges posed by the north Derbyshire landscapeincluding constructing the second oldest railway tunnel in the world, the Stoddart Tunnel at Chapel-en-le-Frith. To view the surviving features of this amazing heritage project and understand their historic significance, download the Peak Forest Tramway trail guide and just hit the panoramic trail.
